The first appearance of the Audi E-Tron Sportback took place at the end of 2019 at a European auto show. The Germans presented it together with the updated classic E-Tron. Retail sales began in the spring of 2020, on the Ukrainian market you can buy the Audi E Tron Sportback from February 2021.

The main differences between the Etron Sportback and the base model

Audi E-Tron SportbackAudi E-Tron Sportback is a crossover from the German brand, but with some structural, cosmetic and even conceptual differences from the prototype. First of all, it is all the same E-Tron, if you look at the wheelbase and overall length. However, the top of the sports version is more sloping. It would seem that the roof is only 13 mm lower than in the original Audi E-Tron. Nevertheless, this small difference was enough to reduce the coefficient of dynamic resistance from 0.28 to 0.25. Thanks to improved aerodynamics of the body with a similar battery and engine, the mileage is increased by about 10% for the 50 and 55 models. This solution, however, and a small disadvantage – over the passenger compartment slightly “lowered” the ceiling and the volume of the passenger compartment is less by 45 liters in the normal state and 70 liters less when the backs of the rear seats are folded. Under the hood, there is an additional 60-liter compartment designed for a portable charger.

Design features of the Audi E-Tron Sportback

Audi E-Tron SportbackThe 2019 Audi E Tron Sportback is identical in design to the base model. It is built on the MLB Evo modular platform (made by Volkswagen) with a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-lever rear suspension. The air suspension is adaptive and can adjust ground clearance in the range of 76 mm. A sharp change of ground clearance mode is supported (15 mm extra), so that you can take the car off the obstacle.

All other technical parameters are identical to the original E-Tron. The rear luggage compartment has a capacity of up to 660 liters. The front and rear running lights are powered by organic OLED LEDs, featuring low power consumption. The front radiator grille, typical of all Audi cars, remains unchanged in the Etrone Sportback. Basic equipment includes regular side mirrors and 19-inch wheels. Digital side cameras and/or titanium 22-inch rims are available at extra cost.

The interior of the Audi E Tron Sportback – exceptional comfort

Audi E-Tron SportbackLike the basic Audi E-Tron, the interior is equipped with two OLED displays with excellent viewing angles and a high margin of brightness (in sunny weather, the image will be clear and without glare). The 4-spoke steering wheel is identical to the one installed in the A7 and A8 crossovers. The steering wheel has the transmission selector and the keys for selecting driving modes (they are located in the right hand thumb area, which is quite convenient). Leather trim, there is climate control in the basic package.

E-Tron Sportback options

Audi E-Tron SportbackSportback comes in three modifications, the differences between which can be seen in the performance tables. They differ in battery and motor power. The Audi e-tron Sportback 50 has a 71 kW∙h battery. In the 55 model it is 95 kW∙h, and the Sportback S has three engines instead of two and an increased acceleration speed. All three versions have a special boost mode, allowing for a short time to sharply increase speed and torque, in this mode Sportback S accelerates to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 210 km/h.

It is worth mentioning that according to the results of test drives Audi E-Tron Sportback gives a benchmark range on WLTP while the battery is new. The low ambient temperature also reduces the power reserve significantly. For example, at -20°C you can expect a distance of half that stated.

Results. Advantages and disadvantages of the Audi E-Tron Sportback

In general, the electric car differs from the basic model (design, body height and some “sports” solutions). Its main competitors are the Tesla Model X and the Jaguar i-Pace (however, the latter is significantly inferior to the Audi E-Tron Sportback in terms of price/quality of assembly and materials).

Pros:

  • bright, memorable design, high quality assembly, expensive interior finishes;
  • Very soft ride, maneuverability, controllability;
  • “sport” mode of the road suspension, which increases the comfort of driving off-road. Slightly increased power reserve compared to the original Etron, thanks to a more streamlined hull.

Cons:

  • the range is less than that of the competitors, even with improved aerodynamics;
  • The digital mirrors from the premium package will seem to many a controversial solution, in addition, expensive to maintain.
